Divine Shelter Schools and John Waller!

Cross International has had the privilege of partnering with well-known Christian Recording Artist, John Waller (Fireproof Movie Soundtrack) to help raise support and awareness for the Divine Shelter Schools in Haiti. The schools provide educations and nutritious meals to devastatingly poor children. Check out some of the pictures from the trip! Photos of our God providing

Working day-in and day-out for a non-profit, I come across photos and stories that normally I would never see. Stories of families moving from small, makeshift shanties into sturdy concrete homes. Stories about children receiving food at school, and how that one meal is all they’ll eat that day. Stories about children being saved from cholera thanks to a new water system being put in place. I don’t say this to boast about the work that we’ve done, I say it to remind myself that the world is so much bigger than the small problems we face in our lives on a day to day basis. And our God is mighty and awesome, never letting anything happen without his permission. Check out some of these photos of God providing, and celebrate with me the power of our God. – Briana B.

Harriet Tubman’s hymnal

From the Washington Post: On a blue-covered table in a Capitol Hill hearing room, an ordinary hymnal was raised to the status of a historical object with the simple signature of its owner, Harriet Tubman Davis. The book of gospel hymns was among an extraordinary trove of Tubman artifacts given Wednesday to the National Museum of African American History and Culture… Lonnie G. Bunch, the founding director of the museum, described the November meeting in Philadelphia when Blockson, who lives there, first showed the staff the 39 objects he is donating. “Each object in this collection humbled us, excited us and moved us to tears. And then, Dr. Blockson uncovered Harriet Tubman’s personal hymnal, and I think many of us lost it,” Bunch said. Harriet Tubman, of course, was the 19-century leader in the Underground Railroad and an emancipation leader, leading hundreds of slaves to freedom. The hymnal, titled “Gospel Hymns No. 2,” was by Philip Bliss (“It Is Well With My Soul”) and Ira Sankey (“The Ninety and Nine” and D.L. Moody’s songleader) can be seen here, including Tubman’s autograph. Interesting to note the ceremony concluded with everyone singing “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” The truth sets you free indeed…

Forced child labor in Haiti

Embedded video from CNN Video CNN has this report from Haiti on child laborers or “resteveks” (Creole for “stay withs”). Cross International is involved with schools for Haiti ‘revstevek’ children. $4400 keeps one school in operation for 10 months in Haiti. Up to 95 children are depending on Cross and our donors to keep their schools open and provide them with an education that will help them escape their current situation. After watching the video above, click here to learn more about our efforts to aid ‘resteveks’ or forced child labor in Haiti. Or click here to download our report on Restevek School Support. Why not hold a worship service in your church to subsidize education for resteveks? Click here to learn how. (HT: Cross Int’l on Twitter)
